“Face” was a long-term series of portraits done mostly within a span of three years. Each portrait was done over the course of a conversation between Joe Braun (ed. The Lune) and a poet with a forthcoming Lune publication. For each individual portrait you see here, several versions were drawn; at the end of every conversation, myself, Joe, and the poet looked together at each version, and between the three of us selected the one portrait that we felt captured something essential in the spirit of the poet. It was a practice of wonder for all of us.

Working with contemplative and experimental poets like Jack Collom, Anne Waldman, Reed Bye and so many others presented a unique opportunity for the exploration of life and spirit in a manner inspired by the triptych: unscripted conversation, crafted poetry, and spontaneous portraiture.
